This past August, I met up with Gabrielle in the studio to capture her senior portraits. I love my work as a senior photographer because it gives me a chance to connect with amazing, driven young people like Gabrielle. Senior year really is the most exciting year of high school.
Gabrielle is a senior at Chesaning High School, graduating in 2018. She came to the studio with her mother, Tracey; godmother, Deanna; and her best friend, as well. Tracey, Deanna and I all went to high school together, so it was great to catch up with them in person during the shoot.
When capturing senior portraits, it is important to me to help showcase the student’s passions, interests and what makes them unique. So for Gabrielle, we focused on two of her loves: reading and soccer. Since Gabrielle is an avid reader, I went to Goodwill and bought more than 70 old hardcover books. I piled them up into an archway, so she could peer through a hole made of books while reading a book. It looked like she was in her very own fortress of literature! Gabrielle loved it. We took a stack of those books out to the woods for a few more pictures to underscore Gabrielle’s love of the written word.
Afterwards, we headed out to capture some pictures on the soccer field. Gabrielle is a huge soccer and Hope Solo fan. She has attended camps and plays on the Chesaning High School girls’ soccer team. I got some pictures of Gabrielle out on the field as the sun set.
My favorite moment of the session was when I showed Tracey an image of Gabrielle from the back of the camera. Tracey started to cry, because she was so pleased I was able to capture the beauty she sees in her daughter. I’m happy I was able to please them both.
While Gabrielle is still unsure about where she will be going to college next year, she is considering Michigan State University. Gabrielle, I wish you the best of luck in this exciting year ahead. I’m so pleased you asked me to be your senior portrait photographer.
